Thanks for the heads up !
I was there and you know what?
The guy that blew me away musically was Victor Wooten. He came out and played a really slow bluesey ballad. His time is remarkable. I always knew of him as a chopfest type guy when he was with Bela Fleck. He also brought out this little girl (daughter?) to sing a duo about peace.
He sounded like a drummer but with harmony and melody. He's a serious force . Totally captivated the audience with his musical ideas.
I just remember getting the most chills from his playing.
El Negro's group was nice too! He played some out stuff. His rhythms are really advanced and I'd like to get the DVD just to transcribe some of the rhythmic phrasing he was using. Nice compositions too!
Weckl to me sounds like he just does things because he can. Amazing drumming but something seems to be missing in my mind.
I felt bad for Steve Smith because when playing the duo, Victor's gear kinda blew up and so it ended up that Steve just traded and soloed by himself. He didn't have much to feed off of and it sounded like that. He played the living s- -t out of the hi-hats and did some nice tricks though.
They showed a Gadd video when he was about 11yrs old on the Mickey Mouse show. He could really play and had serious chops at that tender age. Now, I wish he would stop playing the same solo and play something in the moment.
He has a serious feel that can't be explained.
